News: Increase in UK Air Passenger Duty (APD) from 1 February 2007

Aviation NewsThe UK government recently announced, with immediate effect, that Air Passenger Duty (APD) will double for passengers travelling from 1st February, 2007. This meant that passengers who had booked their tickets for travel from 1st February, prior to the date of the announcement, would be liable to pay the additional duty.

Aviation NewsAirbus has today delivered A320 manufacturing serial number 3000 (MSN3000) to Asia's largest low cost carrier, AirAsia. The official handover to Dato' Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia by Louis Gallois, Airbus President and CEO, and co-CEO of EADS, took place at a ceremony held at Airbus' new Henri Ziegler delivery centre in Toulouse, France.

News: Guggenheim Aviation Partners orders six Airbus A330-200F aircraft

Aviation NewsFollowing the authorization to offer the A330 Freighter last summer, Guggenheim Aviation Partners, LLC (GAP), the US-based aviation investment firm, acting on behalf of one of its investment funds, is the first customer to sign a contract for the A330-200F, the newest member of the A330/A340 family. With this order for six aircraft, converting a Letter of Intent signed last October, GAP becomes a launch customer for the new Airbus freighter with deliveries expected to commence in early 2010.

Aviation NewsLufthansa has once again gained top marks from the readers of the German magazine Business Traveller Deutschland. The airline was ranked first in several categories and received five Business Traveller Awards. For the first time Lufthansa was named the overall “best airline on routes to North and South America”. Lufthansa received a further Business Traveller Award as the best airline in the category “Inflight food and drinks” on flights to North and South America. The readers also attested to Lufthansa’s expertise in the “Safety” category: in two areas - domestic German and European flights and flights to North and South America - Lufthansa secured first place. In addition, Lufthansa impressed the magazine’s readers with its website (www.lufthansa.com), gaining top position in this category, too.

Aviation NewsFlight LX 1934 from Basel to Barcelona, operated by aircraft HB-IXN, took off on time at 09:55 this morning as the first of SWISS’s six new services from EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg which are introduced today. The new connections raise to ten the number of destinations with non-stop service to and from Basel. The six new routes, along with attractive round-trip fares of as little as CHF 99 (including all taxes and fees), will help SWISS further strengthen its position in the trinational Basel region market.

Aviation News A FedEx MD-10 aircraft is now in commercial revenue service with a Northrop Grumman-developed Guardian anti-missile system.  The aircraft almost unnoticed except for a small gathering of press and politicians departed Los Angeles International Airport this week marking the beginning of the operational test and evaluation portion of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Counter-Man Portable Air Defense Systems (C-MANPADS) program.

News: Mobile phones allowed on Ryanair

Aviation NewsRyanair has announced a deal that will let its passengers make calls on mobile phones and use handheld devices such as Blackberries whilst in flight.  It has signed up Onair, part owned by Airbus maker EADS, to allow mobile use on all its Boeing 737 aircraft.

News: Air Canada pilot locked out of CRJ-100 cockpit

Aviation NewsWINNIPEG - An Air Canada pilot who left the flight deck to visit the washroom found himself locked out of the cockpit when he tried to return -- forcing the crew to remove the door from its hinges.  It happened aboard an Air Canada Jazz flight on Saturday, and the company confirmed to Global National yesterday it is conducting an internal investigation into the incident that took place on the Bombardier CRJ-100 carrying as many as 50 passengers from Ottawa to Winnipeg.
